The 18th season of America’s Got Talent continued with its ninth set of auditions on Tuesday evening (August 8). This round featured an 11-year-old boy from the Houston, Texas, area, who wowed the audience with his mariachi talent.

Eduardo Antonio Treviño took the stage and impressed the judges with his rendition of “La Charreada,” a song recorded by Linda Ronstadt on her iconic 1987 album, Canciones de Mi Padre.

Before he started his performance, Treviño told the judges that he had been singing mariachi music since he was three years old and was paying tribute to his great-grandfather, who was also a musician in the 1920s but was unable to find success.

When Judge Sofia Vergara asked Treviño who his idol was in the music industry, his answer was Vicente Fernandez. Vergara told him that she thought he might say that.

All the judges looked stunned as soon as Treviño belted out his first long note and continued to smile as he sang along with his accompanying mariachi band.

Once the song was over, the audience gave the young performer a standing ovation. “Every note you hit, it’s just perfect,” judge Heidi Klum said. Judge Howie Mandel acknowledged that people “respond positively when you see somebody’s culture come to life onstage.”

After giving Treviño all the praise, they gave him four big yeses and moved him to the next round.

New episodes of America’s Got Talent air Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC, and stream the following day on Peacock.
