On the heels of the release of his 11th feature film, Asteroid City, Oscar-nominated director Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) is already talking about his next project, an espionage film that will feature Oscar winner Benicio del Toro (Traffic) in the lead role.
According to the French news outlet LeMonde, Anderson explained that his “next feature film will be linear, with Benicio del Toro in every shot.” He added: “I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”
This will be the second time del Toro and Anderson work together. The pair first collaborated in Anderson’s 2021 film The French Dispatch, which featured an anthology of stories. In it, del Toro played Moses Rosentahler, an imprisoned artist who begins a romantic relationship with one of the prison guards (Léa Seydoux).
Anderson is known for working with the same cast for each of his films but occasionally takes on a new actor for certain projects like he did with del Toro in The French Dispatch and Tom Hanks in Asteroid City. The only other Latine actor Anderson has worked with on a consistent basis during his career is Tony Revolori, who starred in Anderson’s three last live-action films – The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City.
Earlier this year, del Toro received an Honorary PLATINO Award at the 10th Edition of Premios PLATINO gala in Madrid, Spain. Other past recipients of the award include Diego Luna (Andor), Adriana Barraza (Babel), and Edward James Olmos (Stand and Deliver).
Currently, del Toro is shooting Reptile, a crime thriller co-starring Justin Timberlake (The Social Network) and Alicia Silverstone (Clueless).
