Danny Trejo has never met a role he wouldn’t take. Look at his filmography, and you’ll see that Trejo has been featured in more than 450 movies and TV shows in the last 40 years – from Desperado to Machete to RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Plenty of Trejo’s fans, however, wish he had said no to his most recent project.
According to Deadline, Trejo will star in an adult animated comedy series called Mr. Birchum. The show is commissioned by the conservative media outlet The Daily Wire and will star a set of controversial conservative personalities like Adam Carolla, Megyn Kelly, Roseanne Barr, and Candace Owens.
Mr. Birchum is created by Carolla and based on his junior high woodshop teacher. The character was last seen as a puppet on the Comedy Central series Crank Yankers. Trejo is set to play a reformed gang member named Switchblade.
As for The Daily Wire, it’s founded by Ben Shapiro, a conservative political commentator who has argued that homosexuality is a mental illness, advocated for religious profiling as “necessary” in connection to Islam, and who was so pissed off at Barbie that he had to make a 43 minute video about it.
On social media, Trejo’s fans wondered why he would accept a role that would have him co-star with such divisive people and work for a news outlet that is known for spreading misinformation and debuting content like Lady Ballers, a movie that mocks transgender athletes.
Others chalked the decision up to simply wanting to collect a check.
Some joked that maybe Trejo was being forced to star in the animated series.
Many believed it was proof that he was selling out.
Others weren’t surprised only because Trejo doesn’t say no to anything.
