Despite their low-key approach to their relationship, Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling often find subtle ways to acknowledge each other, be it on red carpets or through social media. Their latest nod to their relationship came after Ryan Gosling’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) hosting gig this past weekend (April 13).
In one of the final skits, Gosling got playfully personal as he played a “Cuban-by-association” husband from Tennessee. He spoke in a thick accent with his friends (played by Marcello Hernandez and Kenan Thompson) at the bar.
“Ever since he married a Cuban woman, he’s been different,” says Thompson. Gosling responds, “A Cuban wife can change you.” As the skit continues, Gosling and Hernandez try to convince the Dominican Thompson to go out with them to the club. When Thompson says he can’t go, Hernandez and Gosling respond in comical disappointment.
“Tonight, it’s going to be crazy. Many celebrities are going to be there, man,” exclaims Hernandez, before adding, “There’s going to be Eva Mendes…” The crowd woos and claps, and Gosling is taken aback in silence, holding his hand to his heart and mouthing “woah.”
Eva Mendes proudly posted the hilarious skit on her Instagram today (April 16), clearly loving the reference to Cuba and her husband’s adoption of her culture.
“Coño! My Cuban Papi made this Cuban Mami so happy with this!! Years of hanging out with my Dad paid off,” writes Mendes on Instagram, before thanking fellow Cuban comedian Marcello Hernandez and Keenan Thompson.
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling first met on the set of Between the Pines. While they are relatively private about their relationship, Mendes has shown her support for her husband on social media in the past, like when he was performing “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars. Gosling, too, has given his wife and his family shout-outs, whether he’s doing interviews, walking the red carpet while wearing a necklace with an “E” for Eva on it, or closing out the night on SNL.
