Protesters and allies are coming together in a boycott around the country on June 1st in response to Florida’s sweeping immigration law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis. 

The National Day of Action is a general labor strike urging Latine, Black, Indigenous, and allies across the country to stay home, halt purchases, and close businesses for the day. 

In a TikTok video uploaded by Sam Ruiz, the user urges the public to come together on June 1st to halt all labor in solidarity with the immigrant community. “We are 45 million. 45 million immigrants that live in this country, that can stop the corrupt laws of racism. We are equal and we also have rights,” says Ruiz in Spanish.

This nationwide movement was formed in response to Florida’s most recent anti-immigrant legislation, SB1718. While parts of DeSantis’ “Strongest Anti-Illegal Immigration Legislation In the country” don’t go into effect until July 1st, the public response has been immediate. Truck drivers around the country vowed to stop deliveries across the state and viral video footage of empty work sites and public responses from workers are showing glimpses of the anti-immigrant laws’ impact.

Civil rights groups have also taken a stance, issuing travel advisories to incoming tourists looking to visit the state. The NAACP joined the League of United Latin American Citizens, and Equality Florida, to warn travelers that Florida is “openly hostile toward African Americans, People of Color and LGBTQ+ individuals.”
