Grammy winner Gloria Estefan will be featured in the upcoming documentary Revolution’s Daughter, which tells the story of Alina Fernandez, the daughter of late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

According to Deadline, the film will explore how the Castro regime during that era impacted the lives of the Cuban people, including Fernandez, who is the main subject of the documentary. Fernandez also serves as an executive producer on the film.

“A bond formed with Alina from our shared Cuban roots, yet etched with our distinct experiences, speaks volumes of our kinship beyond political lines,” Estefan told Deadline.

Estefan explained that Fernandez’s story became even more personal to her when Fernandez’s daughter, Alina Salgado, became a lead dancer on one of her tours. She said the “collaboration wasn’t just about music; it was a celebration of liberty, an homage to the brave like Alina [Fernandez], who pursued freedom from her father’s dictatorship.”

She added: “The collaboration I wanted to participate in this documentary to support a narrative of resilience, a reflection of our indomitable spirit, and a recognition of the unbreakable ties that anchor us to our homeland, despite the ideological storms we weather.”

Another film on Fernandez called Castro’s Daughter is in post-production. The narrative feature received major criticism when it was first announced last year because it cast non-Latine actor James Franco as Castro.

John Leguizamo called for a boycott of the film as soon as Franco’s involvement was revealed.

“How is this still going on?” Leguizamo asked on Instagram before calling out the Hollywood machine for continuing with their exclusion of Latine talent, “How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement which would be wrong! I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!”
