A handful of talented Latine actors made the cut when it came to Oscar nominations for the 2024 Academy Awards, which were announced Tuesday morning (January 23).
Acting noms went to Colman Domingo for his role as civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the biopic Rustin and America Ferrera for her heartfelt role in Barbie. This was Domingo’s first Oscar nomination of his career. He became the first-ever Afro-Latino and first gay Latino to be nominated in the Best Actor category. This is also Ferrera’s first Oscar nomination.
David Hinojosa, who is of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent, earned his first Oscar nomination as a producer in the Best Picture category for the film Past Lives. Hinojosa is only the second American producer with Latino roots to be nominated for Best Picture.
Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto landed his fourth Oscar nomination for his work on the Martin Scorsese drama Killers of the Flower Moon. Prieto earned nominations in the past for the films Brokeback Mountain, Silence, and The Irishman.
Cuban-American producer Phil Lord received his third Oscar nomination for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the Best Animated Feature Category. Lord won the same award in 2019 for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and was nominated in the category in 2022 for The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
Society of the Snow was technically submitted for Oscar consideration by Spain but has a Latine cast consisting of Uruguayan and Argentinian actors that deserve their flowers as well. It was nominated for Best International Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Eva Longoria’s Flamin’ Hot received a nomination for Best Original Song for “The Fire Inside.”
Also, a nomination went to Chile’s The Eternal Memory for Best Feature Documentary, which was directed and produced by Maite Alberdi. And Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín’s black comedy El Conde landed a nomination for Best Cinematography.
The 96th Academy Awards broadcast live on March 10, 2024, on ABC.
