Is Tessa Thompson’s King Valkyrie in ‘The Marvels’?

SPOILER WARNING AHEAD: This post discusses events from The Marvels.

The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel, which sees Brie Larson’s titular character Carol Danvers team up with Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau is now in theaters. And the movie features an appearance from none other than Tessa Thompson’s King Valkyrie.

Thompson’s cameo, which was already teased in the movie’s final trailer, is pretty straightforward and picks up from where we saw King Brunnhilde at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, which was released in 2022. The reigning sovereign of New Asgard is called by Captain Marvel to help Skrull refugees who, once again, find themselves with nowhere to go after Dar-Benn’s attack on Tarnax.

King Valkyrie arrives on Carol Danvers ship via the Bifrost Bridge, though the movie doesn’t explain how she is able to control the Bifrost. That’s probably a story for another Thor movie. Instead, the scene focuses on Carol asking Valkyrie for help and plays off the fact that the two characters clearly know each other already.

Valkyrie agrees to give the Skrull refugees sanctuary. She also takes some time to give Carol advice, as seen in the trailer, telling her: “You can stand tall without standing alone,” which seems like particularly fitting advice for a movie called The Marvels

Making the moment even sweeter for Thompson personally, The Marvels is a reunion not just for her character Valkyrie and Carol Danvers, but for her with director Nia DaCosta. Thompson starred in DaCosta’s debut feature, Little Woods, in 2018 and will be starring in her upcoming feature Hedda.

The Marvels is now in theaters.
