Lin-Manuel Miranda and Luis A. Miranda Jr’s Family Fund has pledged $1 million towards New York City’s first immigrant cultural center, which will be located in Washington Heights.

According to Playbill, the ground has already been broken on The People’s Theater: Centro Cultural Immigrante, which is set to be the neighborhood’s first flexible theatre. The theater, which has a budget of $37 million,  is expected to open its doors in 2026.

“It is with tremendous pride that we break ground today on The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante, here in Northern Manhattan,” says both Mirandas in a statement released on October 25th. “It is no secret our family loves this neighborhood. This is because Northern Manhattan is a vibrant, hardworking community of diverse creators, makers, movers, and shakers—all looking to share their stories.”

The exact location of the theater is 407 West 207th Street.

“Theatre is about community, offering a space where art, culture, and identity converge,” the statement continues. “Our uptown neighborhood is more than ready to have a permanent home for its theatre practitioners, to nurture and showcase countless generations of storytellers and stories to come.”

“The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante will be an exemplary space, developing and producing theatre that is more equitable and representative of immigrants, Latine artists, and our communities of color,” added People’s Theatre Project Executive Artistic Director Mino Lora. “For the last 15 years, we have been committed to uplifting the voices of marginalized communities, and The People’s Theatre will connect, inspire, and catalyze generations of immigrants and their allies.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda was recently said to be adapting Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel, The Warriors, as a stage musical. He’s also set to appear in the new Percy Jackson & the Olympians, where he will play Hermes. The series is set to premiere December 20th on Disney+.
