Think Devil Wears Prada in the TikTok Age. Netflix released the trailer for their new show, Glamorous, and if the trailer is any indication of what’s to come, we should prepare for some queer joy, romance, drama, and a whole lot of fun!
We follow Marco Mejia (Miss Benny), a young gender non-conforming queer man who loves the world of makeup. His life’s in a rut when he lands a job with the makeup mogul Madolyn Addison (Kim Cattrall). Inside the Glamorous Cosmetics headquarters, Marco finds family, a new understanding of himself, and multiple opportunities at romance while being challenged by Madolyn because “this job isn’t just glitter and glamour.”
The trailer for Glamorous also makes it crystal clear that this show is unapologetically for the LGBTQ+ community. You see drag queens in a photoshoot and hanging out with Catrall, all of them decked out in their finest. Romances between queer people are not shied away from with Marco having two possible romances and two women of color also making heart eyes at each other. And Marco is a breath of fresh air with the way he expresses his feminity and the way that gender non-conforming queer people push the binary.
Created by Jordon Nardino, who has previously worked on Star Trek: Discovery and Quantico, the series was initially developed in 2019 for The CW and had Brooke Shields in place of Cattrall and Eva Longoria tapped to direct and executive produce. CBS Studios produced the new iteration of the show for Netflix.
The show is led by Miss Benny and Kim Cattrall. Benny initially came into the public eye via Youtube. Later they appeared in shows such as Fuller House, Doxxed, and Love, Victor. And they have a blossoming music career in the works with the release of the EP Swelter. Cattrall is known for her iconic role as Samantha Jones in the Sex and the City franchise and has recently been in the news for her cameo in the season two finale of And Just Like That.
The cast of Glamorous is also composed of names such as Jade Payton (Dynasty), Zane Phillips (Fire Island), Ayesha Harris (Daisy Jones & The Six), and Michael Hsu Rose (Pretty Smart).
Glamorous is set to debut on June 22, 2023 on Netflix.
