Sofía Vergara is spreading her wings when it comes to her acting. The Colombian actress, better known for her 11-year run as Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family and her current role as a judge on America’s Got Talent, is stepping into her first dramatic role with the Netflix series Griselda. It’s set to premiere on January 25, 2024.

The teaser trailer features a voiceover from Vergara, who seems to be facing a group of men as she asks “You’ve thought about me a lot, haven’t you?” The voiceover continues, even as it’s interspersed with glimpses of not just a lot of drugs, but also a fancy house and cars.

“I heard you like my product,” Vergara’s character Griselda continues before promising, “We can make a lot of money together.”

It’s not until one of the men asks who is in charge that we get our first look at Vergara in character as Griselda Blanco, looking more severe and serious than she ever has before. It matches the intensity of how she holds herself in the photos that Netflix also released in anticipation of the series.

Griselda is a limited drama from the creators and executive producers of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. Vergara doesn’t just star in the limited series but is also an executive producer.

The show is inspired by the life of Colombian Griselda Blanco, widely known as “the Godmother,” who created one of the most profitable cartels in history in 1970-1980’s Miami.

The show also stars Alberto Guerra (Dario Sepúlveda), Christian Tappan (Arturo Mesa), Martín Rodríguez (Rivi Ayala), Juliana Aidén Martinez (June Hawkins), Vanessa Ferlito (Carmen Gutiérrez), and is set to feature guest star Carolina Giraldo, aka Karol G.

Griselda premieres on January 25, 2024 on Netflix.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, Griselda being covered here wouldn’t exist.
