Dust off your tape decks. Thalia is reviving ‘80s chic with a new music video for her song “Mixtape Medley” (July 5).
“I have an obsession with this music video,” Thalia wrote on social media to announce its release, and it’s easy to see why. By combining classic anthems such as “Yo no me llamo Javier” by Los Toreros Muertos, “No Voy En Tren” by Charly García, “Obsesión” by Miguel Mateos, and “Mamá” by Los Amantes de Lola, the Mexican superstar takes her fans on a nostalgic thrill ride that throws it back to the ‘80s and ‘90s in her unique style. In the visual, directed by Enrique Vega, Thalia pulls all the stops on serving retro glam. There’s no shortage of neon, denim, and sequins in sight.
“I wanted to touch that vein of nostalgia for that generation that shaped me but also involve the new generation,” said Thalia in conversation with Remezcla. “In [the Mixtape Medley], there is the fusion of the entire ‘80s era because, at that time, we loved to make medleys. So we would run different songs into one long song.”
The medley was pulled from the singer’s Thalia’s Mixtape, an 11-track collection released earlier this year that pays homage to rock en español’s golden era (Apr. 28). Music legends such as David Summers from Hombres G, Aterciopelados, and Roco from La Maldita Vecindad were tapped to collaborate on the mixtape.
To further bridge the gap between generations, Thalia also brought Kenia Os, Bruises, Ben Carrillo, and León Leiden on as special guest collaborators. The project also included a special three-episode docu-series called “Thalia’s Mixtape: El Soundtrack de Mi Vida,” which premiered on Paramount+.
