A group of studios based in Mexico and Spain are collaborating for what is being described as “a hugely ambitious feature film slate” called The Latin House of Horror.
According to Variety, El Estudio, Grupo Morbido, Sula Films are partnering to produce six horror films from some of the most exciting Latine and Spanish filmmakers. Film Factory Entertainment is in charge of world sales.
“[The Latin House of Horror has] the responsibility and commitment of pushing a new wave of creators with a fresh and wild perspective that connects with the imagery and narrative of the world they have lived in and portrayed from the freest standpoint: the genre,” El Estudio producer Enrique López Lavigne told Variety. “We are here to give them a voice.”
The seven filmmakers participating in The Latin House of Horror are Michelle Garza Cevera (Huesera: The Bone Woman), Adrián García Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil), Isaac Ezban (Mal de Ojo), Edgar Nito (The Gasoline Thieves), and debut feature directors Sofia Carrillo, Moisés Romera, and Marissa Crespo.
“This slate … is the result of years of hard work supporting directors and helping grow Spanish-speaking genre films,” said Pablo Guisa Koestinger, Morbido’s founder and CEO. “There are unique voices and exciting stories to tell the world. With Enrique as producer and the alliance with El Estudio we are building The House for them all.”
The titles of the films are 9 Steps directed by Marissa Crespo and Moisés Romera; Dead Man’s Secret directed by Sofia Carrillo; A Fishermen’s Tale directed by Edgar Nito; Family directed by Adrián García Bogliano; Karmin directed by Isaac Ezban; and That Summer in the Dark directed by Michelle Garza Cervera.
“[The Latin House of Horror] is one of the most exciting and ambitious genre projects I can recall over the last decade,” said Vicente Canales of Film Factory Entertainment. “This is the start of a great journey that will bring us much joy and mark a before and after in genre cinema.”
