The world of lucha libre takes center stage in Huracán Ramírez vs. La Piñata Enchilada, a short film produced entirely on an iPhone 14 Pro by Apple.
Shot in Mexico, this short film tells the story of a retired wrestler who is recruited back into the sport, so that he can stop a piñata monster that is terrorizing the city. Apple describes the film as “a tale of honor and redemption [and] a tribute to the inherent sporting spectacle of Mexican culture.”
In the film, a piñata comes to life when the paste used to build it is mixed with chile piquín powder. The creature seeks vengeance against children who enjoy hitting piñatas at birthday parties and celebrations. A search for a luchador who can defeat the frilly villain comes up empty, so the chief of police turns to Huracán Ramírez to save the day.
The late Huracán Ramírez was a legendary luchador and actor in the 1950s, who fought against other greats like El Santo, Blue Demon and Mil Máscaras. His first movie was 1953’s self-titled Huracán Ramírez. Others in the franchise included El misterio de Huracán Ramírez and La venganza de Huracán Ramírez.
“Huracán Ramírez vs. La Piñata Enchilada pays tribute to the movies of the last century, where wrestlers were the heroes that inspired us to dream of a better world,” an Apple press release reads. “The film takes us into a universe full of authentic characters through an exciting story around the eternal clash between good and evil.”
