Guillermo del Toro Almost Directed a ‘Star Wars’ Movie

We almost got a Guillermo del Toro Star Wars movie.

Filmmaker David S. Goyer recently went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and revealed that four years ago he’d finished a Star Wars movie script and del Toro was set to direct. He added, “It’s a cool script …you have to ask him (del Toro) about it. There is a lot of cool artwork from it that was produced.” And it didn’t happen because there was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff happening at Lucas Films at the time.

Though del Toro was pretty tight-lipped about it, he confirmed Goyer’s account on X/Twitter and added a cryptic tease Star Wars fans are still trying to figure out. “Can’t say much,” he said, “Maybe two letters “J” and “BB” is that three letters??”

Whether he was making a sly reference to a possible droid name, or Jabba the Hut, or even Jar Jar Binks, we likely won’t ever know. But fans sure have been having some fun speculating.

Goyer is responsible for the scripts of movies such as the Blade trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. More recently he co-created the Foundation TV series.

Ironically, this isn’t the first time we almost got Guillermo del Toro on Star Wars, and at this point, it feels like he’s meant to visit the galaxy far, far away, sooner rather than later. In 2013 Del Toro turned down the possibility of directing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, because he couldn’t make it work with his busy schedule. J.J. Abrams went on to direct the movie.

With Space Latinos like Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian and Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka at the center of beloved Star Wars stories, here’s to getting a Latine vision behind the scenes of a Star Wars movie sooner rather than later.
